The Hill Country around Austin is home to many attractive communities, and Lakeway, a town of about six square miles on the shores of Lake Travis, is one of the best.

Located 16 miles northwest of Austin, Lakeway has a unique reputation for being both a bedroom community and one of Austin’s favorite getaways. Weekends were made for fishing, sailing, camping, hiking, windsurfing, and golfing in Lakeway, and the lucky residents who get to live and play here recognize the value of their lifestyle.

The population of Lakeway rose from 1,020 in 1984, to 4,044 in 1990, and to it’s present number just shy of 9,000 residents by the 2005 census.

This is a well-educated, multi-generational community, with the largest groups spanning the ages of 25 to 76. Median household incomes in Lakeway are over $103,000 per year, more than double the national average. Residents here believe in investing their tax dollars in their school system, which is administered by the Lake Travis Independent School District. Median single family home prices are $480,000.
 
It’s about a 30 minute commute along Hwy 620 from Lakeway to Austin, although working from home is a growing trend. Otherwise, the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport serves the needs of those flying into or out of the area.


Lakeway, Texas can trace its history back to prehistoric times.

Archaeologists have discovered all kinds of relics here, from prehistoric humanoid remains to dinosaur footprints to mastodon skeletons. It is not unusual to find ancient fossils washed up after heavy rains. More recent signs of the Tonkawas Indians are everywhere, as are signs of the Commanches, Apaches, and Mescaleros, who moved into the area over time.

White settlers arrived in Lakeway in the 1800’s, attracted by the lush beauty and abundant water and game.
